NOTES: 21 Squadron members Allan May and Alfred Hilder had been posted to Cressy Aerodrome to conduct training exercises with the squadron in the area and over Lake Corangamite. At 8.55am, 10 May 1940, Flying Officer Allan Lindsay May (Pilot) and Pilot Officer Alfred Vindin Hilder (Passenger) were engaged in machine-gun exercises when the aircraft was seen to go into a spin and crash into Lake Corangamite, some distance from the shore. Before joining the Air Force, Flying Officer May was a keen militiaman, having served four years with 2nd Artillery Survey Company. He was appointed to the Air Force as an engineer officer, and commenced a flying training course at Point Cook on January 16, 1939, and was promoted to flying officer in October of that year.     By Cressy Aerodrome: History From Ground To Air
N.B. The RAAF Wirraway currently visible in Lake Corangamite is from a low level crash on 23 Oct 1950, where the Trainee Pilot Vance Drummond was rescued.
