For distinguished service during the Salamaua – Lae, Papua New Guinea campaign Aug-Sep 1943, Lieutenant Colonel Smith was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). Colac’s George Smith, who was a Bank official prior to the war, gained the award for using splendid organisational ability in disposing Wampit Force in a mission which was highly successful and had greatly facilitated the landing of paratroops at Nadzab.
